Searching the Network - Students and Alumni

The Search Form

You can search on four fields: keyword, major, occupation category, and business/industrial category. Searching more than one field at once will not narrow your search. Your results will include all contacts that meet any or all of your criteria.

Search for Keyword field:
This field accepts only single keywords. It is not case sensitive and searches among the following: Career Network members' Names of Organizations, Position Titles and Job Descriptions.

Getting the most from your keyword search:
By using the shorter root word, you are likely to obtain more contacts. For example, using "account" would also include results with "accounting," "accountant," "accounts."

What if your results don't seem related to the keyword you entered:
The keyword search will display all results that have the keyword you selected, even if that word is embedded in a larger word. If the keyword is "art," the results will include words such as "start," and "partition."  Tip: Put a space before the word (or in some cases, after) when you enter it into the keyword search field.

Search Majors field
The list in the Search Majors field looks at the majors for the two most recent degrees listed by Career Network members.

What if the results screen shows a major for which you did not search:
The system looks at both the most recent major and second most recent major but on the results screen shows only the most recent major for each Career Network member. Therefore the major on which you searched no doubt was the second most recent major for that particular member and will appear on the contact information screen.

Search by Occupation Category
Search by Business/Industrial Category
Most Career Network members are categorized by occupation category and business/industrial category. Those selections in all caps and surrounded by hyphens are not searchable, but are there to help group similar occupations and businesses/industries together.

The Results Screen

The Results Screen displays the results from your search: a list of matching Career Network members. The results include the most recent degree and year, employer (name of organization), position, ways you may contact the member (interview, shadowing experience or speaker), type of membership (Alumnus, Business Alliance of George Mason University Member, Friend of Mason).

If your results appear inappropriate, read User Help relating to the search field(s) you used.

To view the name and contact information for any of the members on your results screen, check the corresponding box in the leftmost column. Once you have made your selections, click Display Selected Records. If you do not have the password, please see: How to obtain the password.

The Contact Information Screen

Note: When contacting Career Network members by email, use a clear message in the Subject line such as "George Mason Student with a Question" so that the Career Network member will know that your message is not spam.

The Contact Information Screen displays the contact information for the Career Network members you have selected. If you would like to contact any of these members, be sure to read carefully and print out the appropriate guidelines: Interviewing Professionals for Career and Job Hunting Information; Shadowing Guidelines/Responsibilities; or Inviting Speakers - Guidelines/Responsibilities.

How to Obtain the Password (username is always student)

To obtain access to contact information for Career Network members, you must have the password. Only registered students and alumni of George Mason University will be granted the password.
